A quick update with some information about conferences and next week.
CONFERENCES:
I have 15 parent conferences scheduled. Slips will be coming home next week with the day and time. Everyone, so far, has gotten their first choice of times.
One slip (5th grader) was turned in without any name on it. So if you get a phone call from me this week and you thought you turned yours in, that may be why. :-)
These are the initials of the ones I have received: HB, JS, TS, MA, BK, LG, JI, DH, EW, HC, ASt, SF, ASri, CW, JR, GR.
LATE WORK:
I complimented the students today on how much LESS late work I am getting. THANK YOU for asking about pink slips and having those conversations! We're working our way to the top of the proverbial hill; we're seeing that light start to shine at the end of the (late work) tunnel!
SUBJECT UPDATES:
READING: Projects (in class) for the books we finished reading: Due the week of Oct 24. Begin new novels that same week.
LANGUAGE: Back to LWRs. J Continuing with diagramming prepositional phrases; writing expository and creative. We’re taking one of the writings to final copy with the help of Nina LaSeur (Malcolm’s grandmother & former high school English teacher), Lee Gibb, Mr. Enzo, and Kathy Bick. Heads up: The public speaking unit will begin after report cards. Practice at home will be important.
SOCIAL STUDIES: 5th graders: Finish Ch 3 test (open note) and begin Ch 4.
SCIENCE: Independent and dependent variable ws. Acid/acid ongoing.
MATH: Division and multiplication.
SPELLING: U 9
KEYBOARDING: The students can practice at home. However, only the timings done in class will count. We’re starting out with a goal of 20 WPM with < 10 mistakes. That may change as time goes on.
Students can advance as quickly as their skills allow. http://www.sense-lang.org/typing/tutor/lessons.php?lang=EN&lesson=1
Some games for practicing the keyboard appear at the bottom. I liked Typershark, Typingmaster (a lot like Pac Man), and Typing Chef, if your kids already have pretty decent keyboarding skills. http://edtechideas.com/keyboarding-sites-for-kids/
