Balloon Car Race—no “construction” parts (LEGOs, erector sets, etc). See more of description below. This will conclude our Force & Motion Unit.


Goal: To design & build a “car” that will travel a distance with a balloon as its only source of power.

Materials:

Teacher will provide:
1. 2 balloons
2. 3 straws
3. Elmer’s glue (at school)

$$: A limit of $1 can be spent per car.

No more than 3 people may work on a car.

Criteria:

1.   The officially provided balloons are to be the only source of energy for the car.  A maximum of ONE balloon may be used on the car. 
2.   No external sources of energy are permitted including, but not limited to, push starts, blowing on the car, batteries, solar cells, etc.
3.   The balloons may only be blown up using lung power by the car operator.  No other gases, such as Xenon, may be used.
4.   During the initial release of the gas (at the starting line), care should be taken to not enhance or diminish the performance of the car.
5.   The course consists of a concrete surface _____ feet wide by _____   feet long.  The course starts out flat and then goes slightly uphill.
6.   No limitations on size, weight, or material composition are given.
