Seeing grades online:

Alert mother, Emily Deichl, sent me an email saying she could not view her daughter’s grades online. Since I cannot see what you see (or do not see), I referred her Mr. Croff.

This past Friday evening, while showing a new teacher how to maneuver through the grade book, I noticed that a little box on a hidden screen entitled “Publish Immediately” was not checked for all but 3 assignments I had given.

Therefore, I am apologizing for that error. You should be able to see all of the grades your child has received thus far. An “m” indicates that the assignment is missing; I did not get it. The grade book interprets that as a “0”. Once the assignment is turned in, it will average in the new grade. An “inc” indicates that they turned it in, but either directions were not followed or part of the assignment was not finished.

Please let me know (again) if there are glitches. I am not totally aware of how that box became unchecked and created the problem. But it should be resolved now.

Parent Teacher Conferences:

Report cards will be coming home  Oct 30th. Parent teacher conferences will start on Halloween! We will not be meeting late that day.

I know a lot of you have kids in other schools, and you will need to attend conferences for those children as well. If you would like to meet before or after school the week of October 22nd to avoid conflicts in scheduling OR meet the week after parent/teacher conferences, just send me an email with the day & time that works best for you. We’ll go on the first come, first served basis. If I do not hear from you, I will schedule you per your request on the form that will be coming home in the next couple of weeks.

Upcoming dates:

Wednesday, Oct 17th     NOON dismissal

Tuesday, Oct 30th          Report cards go home

Wednesday, Oct 31th- Thursday, Oct 31st

OCTOBER 29
RMC presents its annual Halloween Spook-tacular Chemistry Magic Show. The shows will be at 9 a.m. and at 3:30 p.m. in Fortin 102 auditorium. The public is welcome to attend. The RMC  Chemical Magic class (Morgan Morales, Adam Schweber, Geirint Sis, and Anne Wylie) will perform the demonstrations, including ghostly ectoplasm, enchanted wine, screaming gummy bear, and self-carving pumpkins. Great fun for kids. For more information: Dr. Gavin Kirton, RMC   associate professor, chemistry, ( 406) 238.7377 / E-mail: gavin.kirton@rocky.edu

Reading

5th graders: Presentations will begin on TUESDAY and continue through WEDNESDAY. The students do not have to memorize anything.

6th graders: Students have begun The Year of the Hangman and Bound.

Language

Grammar: More work on commas and verbs.

No LWRs this week due to the short week.  J

Spelling—NO SPELLING due to the short week, with the exception of Personal Spelling Lists.  I forgot to have the kids do them on Friday’s test, so we will “pretest” on Monday with the “final test” on Wednesday. If your child does not have any words on their Personal Spelling List (which is taped into their assignment notebooks every Monday), there will be no spelling this upcoming week for them.

Math

Geometry: We will be finishing the geometry chapter and having a test. The test will be Wednesday.

5th grade Social Studies

Beginning Chapter 3, which is an overview of the Native American regions.

Science—More robots. Most students have determined the ratio of # of degrees for a rotation of the wheel: the # of cm the robot moves.

That led them to programming the robot to move forward 1 m, turn, and return 1 m to the starting point.
The next task is to move 25 paper cups out of a 1m2 area.

After that, they will program the robot to go up a ramp, turn around (without falling off?), and come down the ramp.

I will be announcing a Robot Club in late October. It will be after school and will run through November and part of December. There will be no cost and complete attendance will not be necessary. They can come when it works for your schedule. J
